Our own local $700B bailout!!!!!

Well, not really $700B but if we use Karen's percentages I'd say that $1.7M 'bailout' for the Sheriff is about the same.

http://www.claytoday.biz/content/315_1.php This article is interesting reading for anyone that wants to read about government at it's ... well I'd like to finest but for some reason I just can't bring myself to use that word.

I will give credit to the 3 Commissioners that voted to give the Sheriff the $1.7M he needed for his budget this year. What I can't believe is the absolute abysmal performance of two of the Commission as a whole.

Future Transit Station

In the same article about the new business park approval was this two line gem.

Approved a $5 million agreement to buy 29 acres in the Doctors Inlet area for a future transit station. The property is south and west of the intersection of County Road 220 and the CSX railroad line.

It left me kind of curious so I did some digging on the Property Appraiser and the Tax Collector sites. I'm pretty sure that I found the correct piece of land but I'd like to know if anyone has any more information on what this is all about.

This piece of property (if I have the right one) has been assessed at $694,600 since 2004. It consists of 28.12 acres of land south and west of the CSX tracks and CR 220.

Bring on the Magic Wand!

Great article in MCS about the new PUD approved (by the Commissioners) for the area of FL 16 and CR 315 across from the CC Fair Grounds.

The planned unit development, or PUD, will be phased in over 20 years, but construction is not expected to get under way any time soon, said project planner Susan Fraser.

"The viability of this is ... tied to the Outer Beltway," she said.

Commissioner Christy Fitzgerald, whose district includes the site, said she was "very excited" at the prospect.

"Hopefully, it will bring high-powered jobs [and] have a magic wand for that," she said.

Standing on the Curb

From a post by scoopb4ugo on 9/12 under the blog about the at large amendment being removed from the ballot.

Only problem is, we might be doing Mike an injustice....... Get up from that curb, finder!  You just might be a keeper after all.

Scoop thanks for the kind words and no you would not be doing me an injustice. I was not ignoring the comments, I was just trying to figure out how to respond to them.

Folio follow up to 'Don't Bother'

I happened to stumble across a copy of the September 2nd issue of Folio Weekly today. The page 3 story is somewhat of a follow-up to 'Don't Bother'. But it covered it from the of the 'abstinence only' sex education in our schools angle.

One of the statements hit me as pretty much getting to the meat of the matter.

"The problem, in brief, is this: Most Northeast Florida schools teach and abstinence-only form of sex education. And when the topic of consensual sex is off-limits, experts say, it becomes very difficult to teach about non-consensual sex."

Bridges and a Category II Storm

Let’s talk about bridges. We just got through a TS. Unfortunately a number of deaths occurred due to accidents and drowning at the beach. We had lots of rain with some localized flooding and some wind damage in a few areas.

But luckily no widespread catastrophic damage or forced evacuations from the east side of the river were required. But let’s think about what could have happened if this was a CAT II hurricane and we had to evacuate from the east side.

The Gravy Days are Over?

Is that what this has been? The gravy days? What kind of statement is that to make?

In case you haven't read the article from our BoCC Chairman here is the link.

http://www.jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/081608/nec_318834454.shtml

I've got some real issues with some of the statements in there.

The gravy days are over; It comes down to dollars and cents; That means a very tight budget. Well no kidding. There should never be any 'gravy days', it should always come down to dollars and cents and we should always have a tight budget.

The outer Tollway

Great article in the Business section of the TU today about the outer tollway. Great story if you like reading fiction in the business section.

Some info in there from our D5 Commissioner. He makes this thing sound like a line in a movie. "If you build it they will come". Too bad we're not talking about a Baseball Diamond in the middle of an Iowa corn field.

It has already brought in business says our D5. The BoCC just approved (unanimously) a new 3300 acre community called Governor's Park. I'm thinking it must be either virtual or stealth business because I haven't seen one new business open down there yet. Nor have I seen anything near a commitment for one to come in. Lots of shoulds and wills but no hard evidence.

MCS Candidate Q & A

Meet the candidates article from today's MCS.

Here's the question:

Because of the struggling economy, many private sector employees are getting zero or minimal salary increases. Should county employee unions agree to share fiscal pain in the same manner?

And the beating goes on

Looks like he's back. How convenient. Cookiecutter is new and posts 3 blogs and a comment in just over 30 minutes after 11 PM.

cookiecutter with the same poor spelling and English as spot/don/retiredfarmer/michaelmore and a couple others I can't remember. And a picture of someone of the female persuasion. I'm hoping that isn't a picture of him in 'drag'. That is an image I could live without.

cookiecutter if I'm wrong about your identity I will apologize but I don't think there is much chance that I'll have to do that. If I do, you might be glad to know you have an intellectual twin on the blog site.
