Apology for the truth?
I don't get it. Recently a McCain staffer (Black) observed that if there were another 9/11 type attack on the US before the election, that the McCain campaign would benefit. To me, that is an obvious fact. But a controversy arose and Black apologized. To who? What for? Is the truth not to be spoken? If this were to happen, folks would be forcefully reminded that national security is an issue in this campaign and McCain, generally being thought of as stronger on this issue than Obama, would likely get a bounce in the polls. Oh, sorry, I'm not allowed to say that because it might offend someone! Related: 2 comments
sandbags
After watching days of news showing crowds of people in the central US filling sandbags, it occurred to me to wonder why no enterprising soul hasn't invented a machine to fill sand bags. It doesn't look like it would be rocket science and there sure seems to be a need. Related: 3 comments
Bad corporate decision
Story in the TU this morning about a fellow named Sean Thomas, who did time in prison for a drug offense and had been working at the Granger Lumber warehouse. He got the job through Ready4Work - an organization that helps ex cons find jobs. He worked at the warehouse for 2 years, earning a promotion in the process. The company was sold to Jacksonville ProBuild and Thomas was summarily fired. No reason was given, but the implication was that it was because of his past. This seems to me to be a really poor decision by ProBuild management. Makes me wonder - if a company treats it's employees this way, how will it treat it's stock holders and customers? Oh, BTW, Ready4Work was able to help Thomas find another job.
State Attorney and Sheriff
I like both the State Attorney and the Sheriff and think that they both have been doing great jobs serving the public. I'm unhappy to see them fighting each other publicly. It's a shame they can't work out this issue, and other differences that might arise, quietly between themselves Related: 1 comment
Gas Prices
I keep waiting for a realistic plan from the politicians to get the price of gas lower. So far all I have seen is a plan from Obama and the Dems to tax the oil companies. Somehow this is supposed to make them lower prices. I guess there's something about economics I don't understand. Related: 1 comment
School Superintendent
I sure hope the voters in Clay County are paying attention to the chaos and controversy that is currently going on in Duval County between the school board and the public, and the appointed school superintendent. It has pretty much been the pattern for at least the last three Duval superintendents. They are appointed by the school board, almost immediately get a multi year contract extension, that has extremely generous provisions if they leave or are terminated before the contract extensions expire. They then start going their own way, pretty much ignoring and showing their contempt for the wishes of the people as well as the school board.
Global Warming Questions
Now that we have the latest UN report on global warming (and we all know the UN HAS to be right), there are a few questions that really need to be addressd. For the sake of the discussion, I am going to assume that there is in fact a long term trend of global warming, that all of the dire predictions about the effects of global warming are correct and that man's production of carbon dioxide is the main cause. All three of these assumptions are, in my opinion, higly debatable, but we'll assume them as fact. First question: Exactly why is the current world wide climate the best there is? Why should we not want it to change? Related: read more | 4 comments
