Check shelters for your next pet

I am thrilled at the outpouring of help in support of the Jacksonville Humane Society. By adoptions and by donations. I'm always glad that some animal will benefit.
But remember, the Society is a "no-kill" shelter. Animals it takes in — if there is room — can stay till the day they die or until they are adopted. The animals are not killed to make space for new ones.
And that is what happens at the Animal Control departments in Clay, Bradford and Duval counties. In Clay, animals that are surrendered by their owners are among the first considered for death. The animals' suitability for adoption also is evaluated.

Why take a garbage can?

I was stunned yesterday, when I arrived home in the evening to find someone had stolen — MY GARBAGE CAN!
I guess it just shows thieves will take just about anything. It wasn't my household garbage can; it was a smaller one I use for yard waste. Not THAT big a deal, but I still thought it so ODD that this item would be considered worth the trouble of picking up and walking down the street or getting out of one's car to haul it away.
I can't help but wonder why whoever didn't take the little basketball set on one neighbor's driveway. Or the lawn mower in my other neighbor's front yard.

If American Idol, Dancing With Stars can do it, why can't we?

I don't watch American Idol or Dancing With the Stars. I do know how they work, though: Judges critique and the public votes.
The results — millions of votes — are complied almost instantly (though announced later, so the network can get you to view again).
Casting ballots for president can be tallied quite quickly too. So why do we still use the electoral college system?
Let's use the REAL numbers of votes cast for president, instead of the ones derived from an outdated electoral college system. Becoming president can mean "winning" in those states with the most electoral college votes. It may not translate into the most voter votes.

daylight savings time

Perhaps it is because I am not scientifically inclined, but I just don't understand Daylight Savings Time.
Moving the clock to add light at the end of the day still leaves more darkness at the beginning of the day, doesn't it? To save electricity at night means using it in the morning.
I say leave the clocks at Standard Time. Having daylight at 8 p.m. makes it tough for me to go to sleep!

Gators

Hip, hip, hooray! The Gators did it again. Another SEC championship.
Let us continue to BELIEVE in the team's ability to take the national championship.

Florida Gators basketball

Let's cheer on our Florida Gators basketball team tonight.
