The Citizens Petition Initiative is broken

The premise is this: The Citizens Petition Initiative of the Clay County Charter is broken. Members of the 2005-2006 CHarter Review Commission wanted to amend it during the Charter Review Session but yielded to those loud voices of CTLAC. We decided to pick a fewer number of fights to fight so we could focus on what was important to us: the 5+2. Whether another amendment would have passed or not is not relavent. What is relavent is what is happening this election cycle.



Filibustering 101

Yesterday, you, Marsha and Judy posted separate entries on the same subject - all in a row. Each of you are now posting a link to a petition document with every blog entry. In essence, you (collectively) are using this website for political gain.

Before you go and accuse me or anyone else of crimes against the highest and best use of this site, be sure you are perfectly clean of any wrongdoing, Mike. To me, it's the pot calling the kettle black.

Filibustering is a legal and tactical action to delay the rhetoric flowing from supporters of CTLAC.

I agree, this is a great place to discuss things that matter to our residents but leave the rhetoric at the door. All three of you are guilty of spouting the same stuff. That's not an honest debate of the issues.



SEC Beach Volleyball

Thanks to linda5 for reminding me...

Over the weekend, I had a chance to attend the first - ever - SEC Beach Volleyball tournament held at THE University of Florida.

What an awesome display of female athleticism.

And as the Orange and Blue game attenders filed out of the campus in the thousands, many got to see women competitors at their best.

My question to MCS bloggers is this: Will Beach Volleyball catch on at a national level in college sports?

"Best Phrase" Contest

This came to me last night having returned to this blog site after several hours away and there was a plethora of comments on a thread I had been following. What I wrote wasn't what ended up being posted but in the end, I really liked a phrase that came out of it that I didn't use.

Here's the thing, there are a lot of contenders for Best Blogging Phrase out here on MCS but what I'm proposing (and this message is for CCC, Uncle Rich, OneMann, finder, lilyslore - especially lily - smunsey and all the other great writing bloggers) is that you write one phrase and we get to comment on who's phrase (one word or greater not to exceed a sentence) is the Best Blogging Phrase.



School Impact Fee discussion...

I had time to read the Technical Impact Fee Report that the School Board will be discussing Thursday night and bottomline, it appears the report indicates the School Board must raise it's impact fee from $7,400 per single family home to $9,100 to mitigate impact on the schools.

The report is VERY revealing about population growth. Here's the link:

Concurrency Advisory Committee

Whatever happened to the Concurrency Advisory Committee? Was it de-commissioned? Did it just fade away into a committee sunset?

Now that the appointed date is upon us, why aren't we hearing from this group?

School Board Meeting, April 17 looks interesting...

I noticed a couple of items on this month's School Board agenda that could create some interesting discussion:

1) Development Impact Fee report

2) School Concurrency in Clay County

While I haven't had a chance to print and read the report, I will and hopefully, will learn how much more money it's going to take (with rising costs) to build our schools for the next 20 years.

I haven't heard much about concurrency lately, to it'll be good to hear the update. Whatever happened to the committee on concurrency between the Board and the Commission?



Fitzgerald trials are finally over

The trials of Christy Fitzgerald have been well documented here on MCS. I'm glad for her that she's facing the last of her charges today over in St. Johns County.

I wonder what the outcome will be?

MCS Editorial got it right...

A BIG thanks to MCS for today's editorial. It is so very gratifying people are seeing Clay County for what it is: an emerging county needing adequate representation and leadership.

The editorial observation that a five-member commission cannot adequately create committees to foster communication about county issues is a viable consideration as the county continues to grow and worthy of public consideration.

And again, as the Charter Review has long held: five single district commissioners and two at-large commissioners symbolize both a legislative House and Senate.



College Philosophy

I logged onto my www.facebook.com account and found that my daughter had posted the following quote as her favorite. I offer it here for those who love youthful meanderings:

Enjoy your body: use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or what other people think of it; it's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.

Dance...even if you have no where to do it but in your own living room.

Do not read beauty magazines; they will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents; you never know when they'll be gone for good.

Be nice to your siblings: they're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go, but what a precious few should hold on.
