Highway Funds
I read in the Times-Union this morning (Sunday 08-12-07), that $24 billion of the money that was collected in gas tax for roads and bridges was spent on pork barrel projects in the 2005 transportation bill. That would have fixed a lot of bridges. If we have to pay federal gas tax, shouldn't it go to repair the roads and bridges in this country? Since Congress has seen fit to spend the money on pork barrel projucts insead of on roads and bridges, can we not say that they are responsable for the deaths of the people who died when the bridge in Missippi collapsed? I think they are. It is time for Congress to be held accountable for their actions. My learned friends. You that have a lot more intellect and are more versed in articulated thought than I, could tell me if I am wrong in laying the blame at the feet of Congress? This must be like the gas tax we voted for was supposed to be spent on roads. What did they do with the money? It was put in the general fund. I ask how they could do that? I was told that Tallahasse said that even thoe the voters voted to use the money on roads they could put it in the general fund. This is one reason I will never vote tor a special tax again. We get lied to all the time.

I don't know what the situation is here in Florida but you are correct that Motor Fuel Tax monies are diverted in other states. For example, in Illinois, it has been a common practice to use the MFT fund as a safety valve for other needs and the General Assembly has been doing this for years through a legal loophole allowing them to do so and the infrastructure has suffered accordingly. Now in Wisconsin they are not allowed to do so, all monies collected go back into their intended purpose and you can sure tell when you cross the border as to what state you are in by how nice the road network is in Wisconsin. If this is happening here only pressure on Tallahassee can change this. Believe me, if a bridge goes down here in Florida we'll all know what the situation really is.....unfortunately, some innocents will learn too. But bringing it down to the local level, Clay County, where we approved an increase in the gas tax many years ago to maintain our roads, start to pave the many dirt roads in the county and in general provide better roads in our county. Now where has ALL that money gone?
