Still Dreaming
I was thinking today of what might MLK think about society today. Whould he think we've come far? or whould he think we've just scraped the surface? Granted, we have come along ways, but exactly how far? Will we ever achieve total equality in this society? Just wondering.......

Does one have anything to do with the other? What does an over abundance of stupid people have to do with it? Does that mean if you're stupid you don't deserve equality? Or, are you saying that stupid people are the reason there will never be complete equality? I think equality will always fall a bit short for the same reason people kill, molest, rob etc. As a species evil walks among us and always will. Submitted by SoloVoce on Tue, 01/22/2008 - 8:56am.
Marsha, You hit it with your second statement. Yes, very honestly, I think that stupidity is ruinous to society, any society & in any number situations. We, as a society of humans, have always had people who have behaved stupidly, done stupid things & unfortunately, passed on this behavior to their young. The usual retort is something like, you'll have to pardon me, but that's the way I was brought up. Well, I don't excuse that type of excuse, because that is exactly what it is. An excuse. If one were to accept that type of reasoning, then that would exclude the possibility of the person from actually thinking & changing their behavior for the better. And lest any of you think that I'm picking on a "Southern," thing, think again. I'm from the North, Chicago. Ask some Northern white Yankees what they think of Mexicans or Puerto Ricans & you'll find a goodly number of people who are racially &/ethnically bigoted. Archie Bunker was not just a stereotype. He was representative of many white Northerners & that does not make that type of thinking any less stupid. Racial bigotry is stupid no matter how one tries to describe it. That's the bottom line. Regardless, we just have to keep dealing with it & make sure that it doesn't get the upper hand. I agree with your statement on evil. Historically, it has always been easier to destroy than to create, or sometimes just to understand. (To paraphrase Mr. Spock) But take a look at pretty much any kind of evil. Somewhere in the mix lurks something stupid. I just tell it as it is without the flowering perfume of being PC. I also think that stupidity doesn't deserves any kind of courtesy. It only deserves the chance to change for the better or be eliminated. JATFUR. RichK

Great question Steve. Sorry about your buddy Fred. We have come a long way, but still have a long way to go. But of course I am a member of the majority race. You'd probably get a different response from someone of a minority race. There was an incident in Clay Clounty in the past few weeks where a babydoll with its face painted black was hung from a tree in someone's front yard. It was removed by the FBI after the CCSO declined to investigate after more than one complaint to them. I'm surprised this has not been reported in the press (that I've seen), but know that it happened because it was told to me by the person who called in the complaint to the CCSO, and then the FBI. My theory is that in a hundred years or so when the "mixed race" is the majority race, racial discrimination will finally begin to fade into history. It's hard to hate people of different races when they are in your own family. People are talking about ...Here are the recent blog postings with the most comments. |

Smuncey,
We have come far, more than just scratching the surface, but still have a long way to go. Total equality? I doubt that we'll see it in our lifetime. There is just no way to pretty up the picture or say it nicely. We still have an over abundance of stupid people that clutter up the landscape while using up precious air molecules. That's pretty much the long & short of it. The best we can do is to keep trying. JATFUR.
