Appears Sheriff Candidate Mike Taylor's Campaign Violated Law...I know all readers had to see the Mike Taylor for Sheriff campaign signs throughout Clay County yesterday. They were placed at all, or most, polling locations throughout Clay County on the Public Right-of-way. This is in violation of Clay County's sign ordinance. One would think that someone running for Sheriff would at-least be familiar with, and abide by, the laws of Clay County. Notice you did not see any other Sheriff candidates' signs out; they must know and respect the laws of Clay County. Contact was made with Clay County Code-Enforcement(904-269-6310) who confirmed that if the signs were on County Right-of-way they were definitely in violation of the law. If you observed them, you saw that in some locations they were even placed between the sidewalk and the road. This is a flagrant violation because it obstructs the sidewalk and distracts vehicle operators. Someone will respond to this and say it was just some anxious volunteer for Mike Taylor that did this. If Mike Taylor or any of his campaign members observed these violations yesterday, He nor they did anything to correct it, because the signs were still up at 7:00 P.M. in multiple locations. You, as a concerned citizen, deserve to know what type of candidate you are looking at here. Some might say that he did this for name recognition. Well it worked, Mike Taylor should be recognized as the Sheriff candidate who has no regard for the law. Were the other signs in violation also? If so, then they should ALL have been removed. I didn't see one at Industrial Loop when I was there around 3 pm .... if I had I would have asked if I could have it and placed it in my yard. Perhaps someone beat me to it. All the signs on public rite a way were technically in violation, but not if you are a realtor or politician. Taylors were in violation of other laws like Fl. election law Submitted by adiossheriff on Thu, 01/31/2008 - 9:59am.
Trust me he is having his crackerjack legal advisor (SOLA) researching as we type. If there is a hint of blood in the water we will know soon. If truth holds to form we await Rick to get a grand jury seated to hear these terrible violations. His M.O. is just that. Maybe his investigators will do a better job than they did on Fitgerald. We can waste more money, give Rick free publicity, and drag a potential enemy throught the mud. What a great country. Submitted by cluelessinclay on Thu, 01/31/2008 - 10:07am.
Ex, Realtors must follow the same guidelines as anyone under the sign ordinance as far as placement, size etc. They don't have different rules or treatment. My friend just retired from real estate and she said code enforcement trucks pick up illegally placed signs all the time on Fleming Island. I don't know any thing about political signs and election law but there has been a big Lee sign in Green Cove since the 2006 elections. Guess enforcement is better @ Fleming Island than down where I live. If the Sheriff candidate was violating election laws so was Romney, McCain etc. Submitted by Angela on Thu, 01/31/2008 - 10:29am.
I had a friend of mine who talked with the General Counsel's Office of Elections in Tallahassee and she said that was not a violation of Fl Election Laws as long as the required wording per Fl Statutes was on the signs. He is allowed to collect signatures, have bumper stickers, clothing, flyers and post signs per local sign ordinances. If they have the proper wording on them per FSS. If he was in violation of the local sign ordinance in Clay County on Tuesday he was in good company when I saw the signs. Because they were placed where everyone else's was posted. I am not a Mike Taylor campaign volunteer. But, I think the act was brilliant campaign marketing. Violation of the county sign ordinance? I suppose it was. All political signs posted in county right of way are in violation of the county sign ordinance, regardless of the election. However, the county has always allowed election signs to be posted on election day in past elections. I also suppose Mr. Taylor was in good company with Mr. Thrasher's candidate Mitt Romney and Governor Crist's candidate John McCain and others. At least Mr. Taylor's signs were removed when the polls closed, unlike the other candidates whose signs are still up. Violation of Florida Election laws? I don't think you have a leg to stand on. I saw the signs and it appeared the required political disclaimer was printed on the bottom, although I do admit I did not get that close. No other Sheriff's candidates sign out? I guess Mr. Taylor's campaign caught everyone else asleep. Brilliant move! Anxious volunteers? I would say they were pretty dedicated volunteers to post that many signs all over the county and then staff the polls to get signatures. I did sign a petition. So far I kind of like the guy. It looks to me like Mr. Taylor's campaign did exactly what he intended and you have helped him along by promoting the "buzz" throughout the county.

Greetings all, Just a quick note. For the record, Im a Beasler supporter, but I had to tell this story. I was at a local restaurant about a week ago and noticed that an overlly sized gentleman had to many adult beverages. The wait staff tried to cut the man off and tried to have him pay his tab and leave. The man became very aggressive toward the staff and looked as though the situation might escalate. I stood up to support the staff in case the situation went from bad to worse. As the moment reached a boiling point, another patron stood up and took control. He politly asked the gentleman to leave, but to no prevail. He then asked again nicely, but the gentleman refused. At this point, the gentleman acted as if he might take a swing at the fellow patron. The Patron told the man that he didn't want to do that, and politly asked the gentleman to pay and leave. The situation was resolved peacfully, thankfully. I must give credit where credit is due. The patron who handled this disgruntled customer was Mike Taylor. He was professional, polite and made a stand when others just watched. Im not saying go out and vote for Mike Taylor, but I will say he showed more class and professionalism then most. Make it a Clay Day! Thanks for your blog smunsey...refreshing to read something uplifting for a change, especially about a political candidate. Hope MCS will post your blog in their paper. I don't know any of the candidates challenging Sheriff Beseler, other than what I saw and heard during the forum at the Thrasher Center. So, I'm still looking and listening. Stryker

It was refreshing to get a look at a canidate in a real life situation. I did know this was Mike Taylor until after the confrontation was resolved. He showed more class and professionalism in 5 minutes then I've ever seen from any Sheriff in Clay County in over 20 years (except for Dalton Bray). Just thought I'd share. According to an article in today's MCS, Saturday Feb. 2, 2008 by Lamar Thames, candidate Mike Taylor's signs WERE LEGAL! It was verified by staff writer, Beth Cravey after talking with Jennie Bailey of the Supervisor of Elections Office. Mr. Taylor just got a 'jump start' and a darn good one ....... showing his smarts early in the game. Am sure there are lots of people who are asking "Who is Mike Taylor?" I know I am!! Areuserious.......after smunsey's blog, I think we all have an idea the kind of candidate we are looking at when it comes to Mike Taylor.....a man of class and professionalism. Stryker

i think your blog says it all. Mike Taylor has class Submitted by JenniferR on Thu, 03/06/2008 - 10:56am.
Munsey - I'm confused. You say you are a Beseler supporter but yet say that Taylor has more class than you have seen in the CCSO in 20 years...4 of these years would be under Beseler's watch. What gives? What's the attraction of Beseler? People are talking about ...Here are the recent blog postings with the most comments. |

Yes I saw them and my friend signed a paper to have his name placed on the ballot. Those signs were right out there with the Romney signs and everybody elses too. They were gone when the people collecting signatures and giving out bumper stickers left. They took them with them.
Just wait until election time gets here we will be inundated with political signs with so many people up for elections in Clay County. The best is yet to come.
I think code enforcement has learned that's a waste of taxpayers money to chase political signs.
