Rules for campaign signs at polls

Signs for candidates or political causes may be placed near election poiling places, but there are regulations governing their placement.

Such signs must be at least 100 feet from the entrance to the poll location, according to the Clay County Supervisor of Elections Office.

Also, the county sign ordinance prohibits signs in the public right of way.

All of the "controversy" over election signs caused me to make a few inquiries of my own and I learned the same information in this post.  I also learned that although signs posted in the public right of way are technically in violation of the ordinance, the county generally overlooks it on election days.  However, I still see several Presidential candidate signs that have not been picked up by their campaign workers.

Only canditaes on ballot signs are alowed at polling places Taylor is not a candidate until qualifying.

The county sign ordinance makes no allowance for anyone "qualified candidate" or otherwise for posting signs in the county right of way.  It is a standing practice by the county to allow free speech on election day and not molest campaign signs in the right of way on election day only.  All of the signs for existing "qualified candidates" still in the right of way are in violation and will be picked up by county work crews.  I commend Mr. Taylor's campaign for promptly removing the signs once the polls closed.  He has shown discipline and respect for the community by campaigning outside the 100 feet limit as required by the Florida election laws and removing his signs.  Kudos to Mr. Taylor on a well executed campaign tactic!

One more thought.  I am sorry but if you think that only qualified candidates are allowed to campaign with signs, bumper stickers, cards, etc...That is simply wrong.  Qualification by the Supervisor of Elections office does not officially occur until about 60 days prior to the election.  I have seen Gary Newman cars, Leroy Ennis cars, Rick Beseler cars and Mike Taylor cars.  All 4 candidates running for Sheriff are marketing their campaigns, prior to "qualification", but that is what they are supposed to do.  It just appears Mr. Taylor beat them all to working the polls on election day.
