I had to make one of these government code cheat sheets after my first meeting on the School Concurrency Committee. It's a shame people have to resort to this kind of thing just to try to keep up with with how their government conducts public business. One suggestion I'd offer from the deep, dark recesses of The Swamp's journalism classes and The Associated Press Stylebook. Don't use an acronym during first reference. Use the full name first, followed by the acronym in parenthesis, and it's much easier to understand. For example: "The Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) meets Thursday. The MPO will discuss several topics." Then folks will have half the translation process licked. They'll know what the MPO is, and will only be left to figure out what it does. Michael S. Mann

Read- I deleted the list of acronyms that appeared just before your most recent. About the first list - to delete those, I would have to delete this whole blog! But besides that - thanks for taking the time to create this list - it's really quite amazing.

read 44 ........ Thank You! You have answered many a question for me and I'm sure for others also. This is fantastic!! My printer decided to take a 'siesta' so I was unable to print your Acronym Assistance list until today. Now I, along with others, will know what SIS and other acronyms actually stand for. I was having to take a 'waq' at some of them. Stryker Submitted by Cookie on Thu, 04/17/2008 - 3:57pm.

I will add them on the next update. It did take a while. I saved them while reading along and not always knowing what people were talking about. I looked them up and then posted them together. I used the new skill of editing an old blog entry today while I was at it. I did it all by myself this time without having to ask Jonathan to do it for me. Part of the time was spent fighting with the system here. I can paste something then I have to go back and add spaces to make it come out in a row instead of one very long paragraph. If anyone knows how to stop that it would be nice for them to share it. I tried putting it in Word and in a Web format but it doesn't always work for me. If I have interpreted any one of the acronyms in a way that was not intended, let me know. Most will recognize their contributions to the list. Submitted by read44 on Wed, 07/30/2008 - 10:59am.
Thank you. I can barely keep up. Thank you for your earlier posted comments Solo and OneMann. OneMann, some have started using your advice about showing the meaning of the acronym when used the first time. I left BYOB-Bring your own bottle and BS off the list-well you know what that one stands for. Submitted by read44 on Mon, 09/08/2008 - 11:19am.

Read,
Thanks for the assistance. You're right if you thought that all of the acronyms could be overwhelming. Wish this was brought out a long time ago & wish I would have had the smarts to ask @ it. Obviously, as has been stated, we have a # of people on the blogs who are extremely well versed in county politics & have their fingers on many pulses. This will come in very handy. Once again, thanks.
