139 Members have already signed HR 4088 the save act

House Republican leaders will introduce a petition drive today to force Democrats to debate immigration this year, using a Democrat-sponsored bill to box them into taking a stand on employers who hire illegal immigrants.
Republican leaders reached the decision to initiate a "discharge petition," a parliamentary move minority parties can use to force issues onto the House floor over objections of the majority.

Republicans are using a bill sponsored by a conservative Democrat, Rep. Heath Shuler of North Carolina, to try to force the issue. The bill would boost the number of U.S. Border Patrol agents and require businesses to check employees' Social Security numbers against a federal database, known as E-Verify. The system is currently voluntary.

Republicans must collect 218 signatures, or a majority of House members, to force the bill onto the floor over the objection of Democratic leaders.

I look forward to this debate.  This is a huge issue for the country.  It's impractical to think that we can round up all 12 million + and bus them home.  It flat-out is not going to happen.  To me, it is crazy to automatically grant them all instant legalized status.  If we do that, just abolish the INS and throw open the gates (no, I mean wider than they already are.)

So, what does that leave?  A whole lot of room for a lot of political grandstanding.  I just hope something comes from it.  If "they" are here and expecting services, then "they" should be paying taxes at the very least, which implies some sort of legal status.

This should be good, especially during the presidential race.

Baxley we don’t have to bus 12 million of them home if the save act passes they will load the trucks and head home on there own. If they can’t find work they can’t stay here. It is already happening in the states that have passed strict laws on illegal immigrants. Mexico is raising hell because their boarder towns are being flooded with the illegal returning home. I have no problem with any immigrant wanting to come to America. I do have a problem with them coming here illegally and taking the jobs that our own people can do. There are a least 12 million Americans and legal immigrants it this country that can fill those jobs. At first it may look like there are not enough to fill these positions, but once we become acclimated to the new work force it will be Ok. And for the jobs that legal  workers don’t want to do, such as agriculture, I say get these candy ass prisoners in the fields and make them work instead of sitting in our prison figuring out ways to hone their criminal activity when they get out. But that is a whole other topic.

Bax,

I'd like to ponder on the impractical.  At one time, it was thought impractical, not to mention dangerous, to think of using electricity to light our streets & homes.  At one time, it was thought to be impractical to span the continent via rail. At one time, it was impractical to allow blacks or women to vote.  At one time, it was impractical to think of flying in a heavier than air machine, go into outer space, talking over the phone, interstate highways or having people get information by a bunch of connected computers.  Shoot, I've been talking @ an interstate aquaduct system to relieve flooding in one area & drought in another.  See the pattern?

Part of the problem is that it gets into the mindset & people see it as such an overwhelming issue that it should not be pursued.  If we, as a society, deem worthy our keeping the sovereinty & security of our nation, let's get into the mindset that we should put our resources in our country first.  Troops in Korea, Germany, Japan, Okinawa, the Middle East might be brought home to protect our borders.  Limited time laws, under special circumstances, could be passed to use them for domestic policing purposes.  It is possible.  It is practical.  Especially when compared to the cost the taxpayers pay now & the threats of security we now have.  Will we have higher food prices?  Yes.  Will we have fewer people to do the grunt work? Yes.  But only until we settle into the situation, as we always have, of circumstances that we were not used to.

Look to the sacrifices & following advances that were brought about in WWI & WWII.  People did without or would figure out a way to make do.  People invented new ways of doing things.  And they not only survived, they thrived.  We have been spoiled & maybe we need another wake up call.  Maybe some will have to drag their sorry butts out & work their own lawns or find a better landscape philosophy.  Big WOOF.  Maybe job opening in the service community, construction & the like will open up for legal people to fill.  Regardless of the dire warnings, if we removed every illegal immigrant from our borders, we would suffer.  No doubt @ it.  But only temporarily.  We've found ways before & I think we would find ways to fix the problem again.

Ya got to keep the faith baby.  We, like most people, can be resilient as all get out.  We just need a sufficient kick in the arse to start the ball rolling.  Thus endeth the lesson.  Catch the CUBS when you can.  Baseball fever.  CATCH IT!  JATFUR.

It's been done before. No one to do the jobs? We have lots of welfare recipients that could do the jobs but won't.

We spend way too much time and money protecting their 'constitutional rights'. It is my opinion that they have none. If you aren't here legally then the constitution does not protect you.

You get caught, you go home. Now, not 3 years from now when we finally get through the court system. That is if we can find them again.

How long before e-verify is used for something other then immigration.  Is this the beginning of a national ID?

Alot of illegals work under the table.  I touched on this last week, amnesty for a tour of duty of however many years you were in this country illegally.  If you're willing to serve this country then you should be allowed to be a citizen.  We have people who are not citizens serving now with no promise of citizenship, some do it because the love the good old USA.

Otherwise go back where you came from and come back in the right way.  Are we going to do away with laws because just too many people broke the law to deal with, or make exceptions because of the millions that are here.  Will that deter more from coming?

I'm with you Baxley, looking forward to see what happens with this.

For 5 or 6 years we Republicans had House, Senate, and President and did nothing to address the situation. President Bush has done nothing but encourage this travesty of invasion. The labor cost (picking) a head of lettuce is 3-5% of your store cost, yet we are afraid to stem the invasion for fear of farm workers getting a pay increase.

The reason many of our hospitals are closing is uninsured illegal draining the medical system....McCain also is an advocate of illegal immigration Pelosi is one part of the problem...Hold politicians accountable.

What does it take for Americans to understand that we are supposedly a free nation, English speaking, the last time I looked and accountable to ourselves only, Not Mexico, illegal aliens, or any other agent.

Mrs. Pelosi and the whole democratic party are agents of chaos, utterly as corrupt as the administration that allows foreign nationals to come here and demand that their language be spoken and that they receive anything they ask for from the American citizenry and legal residents. It's insanity. it seems the politicians didn't understand what happen last summer when amnesty failed.

Many of them are controlled by big business and we need to vote them out, but in the mean time we need to send them the message again, no to amnesty." the amnesty agenda in Congress is designed to enlarge the Democratic electorate. "You've got Ms. Pelosi and the traditional Democrat groups basically wanting to see this population of 20 million illegals voting for Democrats.

They want to give them residency, citizenship, and register them to vote so they can use this illegal population as a political bloc that's behooving to them because they're the one who empowered them with the votes."

We are talking about these PEOPLE as if they're not people just some group getting in the way of OUR progess.  Not trying to be liberal here, but lets take a moment and realize that these are humans futures that we are discussing.  I agree 100% that the criminals should be deported assuming they can be found.  The remainder are here to stay.  Those who are illegal which is most, should be legalized through the proper system and if they don't wish to become legal and start paying for everything that we currently pay for then they can be deported.  This tamper proof id system that has been sugested by some is garbage and i agree with bax on this one deporting however many millions of people is not practical and regardless it won't happen.  The borders must be secure and those who are here besides criminals, frankly should be made legal and stay.  All politics aside, regardless of which party will benefit the most, we should be considering and considerate that at the end of the day our nations poorest and homeless as horrible as that must be are still in better shape than most of the world, the immigrants who are here want to have what we have and here we are bitching about their existence, some of you rather arrogant folks on this blog need to think why and what this country was founded upon and what we started as.

Foxx, if that is the case, does that mean if I don't pay income tax for 10 years, the IRS won't ever make me pay it again because I got away with it?   Does that mean if I deal drugs for years and get away with it, I am not committing a crime a anymore?

Europeans who want to immigrate to the US wait years for a visa, and citizenship, so we let Mexicans get it for free and pass to the front of the line????  Deportation, yes it is practical, but not overnight.  It has taken the US years to have this many illegals here.  So, let's close the borders and start deporting every illegal, one at a time.  You don't need sweeps of INS, you can just pick them up when you find them.  Run a NCIC and INS search, and do what needs to be done.

Look at Great Britain.  They have communities that now operate under Islamic sharia law.  There are towns in GB where non-Islamic people aren't welcome, and don't go.  Those people entered GB legally for the most part.  Think about that when you say  "we can't just deport all those people."

They will be deported through attrition, as they should be. Of course they are humans and should be treated as such, but their futures are not here until they go home and come back the right way. They would have a future in Mexico if they would stand up to their own corrupt government. They have broken the laws of our land and should not be rewarded for doing so! If they want to have what we have they need to go back home and work for it. I know what this country was founded on, and I know what this nation started as. We are all immigrants, immigrants who came to this country according to the laws of the land.   This country was founded on the rule of law and if expecting immigrants to follow the law is arrogant, then I am one arrogant SOB. The only thing that you said that made any since is that our boarders need to be secure. If we as a people set a precedence of ignoring the law just where should it stop?  The people have spoken and it will happen, why because 85% of Americans feel as I do. The save act will pass!

Immigration implies that there was some type of procedure to go through to get here. What these people are doing is trespassing.

When you have a family to support and medical bills to pay you may think differently. I don't know you or your family but I'll bet that your Dad and/or Mom paid a lot of money for medical insurance.

I know I do. When the bill for my heart operation came in it was for $50K. That is one hell of a lot of money. Luckily my health insurance covered most of it. If I were an illegal it wouldn't have cost me a dime. Why? Because the hospital cannot refuse them service.

Do you know why I was billed for $50K, because the hospital has to make up for that cost someplace and that someplace is on the back of the people that actually pay.

at the end of the day our nations poorest and homeless as horrible as that must be are still in better shape than most of the world

Foxx, I told you I would try not to insult you by talking down to you due to your lack of life experience. I am trying very hard to keep my word. So keep that in mind.

Please! When was the last time you were hungry? I don't mean that dinner was 30 minutes late, I mean HUNGRY!

Hungry like you haven't had a bite to eat in 2 days. Hungry like you went out and picked up bottles and cans to make enough money to buy a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter. To hell with jelly or milk, it's water to wash it down with. Hungry like you haven't had to defecate in a week because there is nothing in your stomach to pass.

When was the last time you were cold? I'm talking NE cold where 10 below 0 is not an unusual thing not Florida 25 degrees cold. I mean cold like you would walk 10 miles of railroad track to find enough coal to burn a fire for a few hours. Cold like you weren't sure if you would ever get warm again.

Speaking of arrogance. I've been so freakin' hungry that my stomach thought my throat was cut more times than I ever want to remember. To not have a clue as to where or when your next meal might be is the most horrible feeling in the world. It is just damn near totally debilitating and humiliating.

If you haven't been there don't try to tell someone how good they have it compared to the rest of the world. That isn't putting food in that person's mouth. It isn't putting a roof over their head or a blanket in their hands so they don't freeze.

Personally I don't give a crap about the rest of the world. They are not my problem. Yes I admire their work ethic but when we solve our hunger and poverty problems in this country maybe I'll start worrying about them. The money we send to other countries in a year would feed every poor and hungry man, woman and child in this country for 3 or 4 years.

Spending billions (and that is with a B) on illegals while we have hungry citizens is absolutely horrendous.

And now I'll get off my soap box. Man I hate it when I do that. Thought I had gotten beyond that years ago. Guess not. But I'll not appologize for how I feel about it.

I'll read the entire act within a few days, but one section interested me, i'm speaking of the save act, section 152 labled as findings:

Net growth of illegal aliens has increased appx. 500k a year.

11 Million est. illegal aliens.

65% of illegal narcotics enter through the southwest border.

Border communities incur 89 million and over annually (costs)

Local law enforcement along the border is provided no assistance in covering expenses related to drugs and illegal aliens.

You are right, in the bill HR4048 there is no call for rounding up the illegals and busing them home. That would not be very realistic to try and round up 20 million people and deport them. What the save act does is reduce the number of the illegal immigrants through attrition: A gradual, natural reduction in membership or personnel, as through retirement, resignation, or death.

When undocumented workers can not find work, and their welfare is cut off they will have to go back to Mexico, of where ever they came from. If this does not happen we will destroy the very fabric this great nation was founded on, our freedom.

I have never seen the gumball theory before, it is extremely eye opening. This theory just reinforces what I have been saying. Please call your representatives and ask them to sign the discharge petition, before Mrs Peolsi destroys this country as we know it. With her agenda to destroy the Republican Party, by granting amnesty to 20 Million illegal immigrants. The way she sees it is if the Democrats get them amnesty they will all vote for her party. She can’t see that her agenda has a more devastating effect on this nation other than destroying the two party system.

Please make some important calls for SAVE Act

Please call your US Representative from Florida at 202-224-3121 to urge the Representative to sign the Discharge Petition to force a vote on the SAVE Act (H.R. 4088) if they have not done so already per the list below.  Additional information available at NumbersUSA and FAIR.Not

NOT Signed Alan Boyd (a co-sponsor), Corrine Brown, Kathy Castor, Lincoln Diaz-BalartMario, Diaz-Balart, Alcee Hastings, Ron Klein, Tim Mahoney, Kendrick MeekIleana, Ros-Lehtinen, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Robert Wexler

Signed: Jeff Miller, Ginny Brown-Waite, Gus M. Bilirakis, Connie Mack, Ric Keller, Ander Crenshaw, Tom Feeney, Cliff Stearns

AS of April 1st, 2008 we need only thirty seven more signatures to force the discharge petition, so the save act can be brought to the floor for a vote. Pelosi, the speaker of the house is doing everything she can to see that an amnesty bill is attached to the save act.

You can bet that Pelosi’s agenda is to get amnesty for the 12 to 20 million illegal immigrants in this country. She knows if she can secure her amnesty bill, she will have the illegal’s democratic vote. This action would destroy the two party system as we know it.

What she hasn’t taken into account is the damage, and the destruction, of our infrastructure that will take place if the save act is not enacted into law. Along with a common since approach to the numbers of immigrants we allow to come here legally.

Please Email this information, and links below to your state, National representatives, and all of your friends. Lets get the thirty seven signatures needed to secure our countries future. 78% of Americans see illegal immigration as a threat to our economy, and the future of our country. Our government works for us! Let them know that you are watching their actions, and the way they vote. We can win the good fight, speak up Americans It's your government

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and a handful of her far-left cronies in Congress are plotting to put amnesty for 12-20 million illegal aliens back on the table! And their first order of business is BLOCKING legislation that would finally beef up our nation's border security and crack down on employers that hire illegal aliens.

We're talking about the Secure America Through Verification and Enforcement Act of 2007 or SAVE Act of 2007 (HR 4088), an enforcement-only bill that will add 8,000 agents to secure our borders and implement systems that will allow employers to easily verify workers' immigration status.

There has been speculation for some time that Pelosi and liberal Members of Congress were meeting behind closed doors... planning to unveil a 5-year amnesty plan in the Spring. But if her 5-year amnesty plan is to succeed, THE SAVE ACT MUST DIE!

Perhaps that explains why many Democrats who actually co-sponsored the Secure America through Verification and Enforcement Act of 2007 or SAVE Act (HR 4088) have not yet signed the discharge petition that would bring the bill to a vote and prevent Pelosi and liberals in Congress from silently killing it in committee.

As you already know, the SAVE Act is an enforcement-only bill that will add 8,000 agents to secure our borders and implement systems that will allow employers to easily verify workers' immigration status.  And now it appears that Pelosi, Baca and company are getting desperate and hedging their bets. If they can't kill the SAVE Act outright, they'll neuter it with a killer amendment.

We can't let that happen!  If 37 additional Members of Congress sign the discharge petition, the SAVE Act WILL come to the floor of the house for a vote!If the SAVE Act comes to the floor for a vote, IT WILL PASS!

And ALL of them flew and continue to fly the AMERICAN flag as their flag. They are proud American citizens.

Truth Hurts

I couldn’t agree with you more. The light of freedom has always shined bright in this country. For all that have wanted to come, we have greeted with open arms. I have no problem with immigration; my grandparents came from Europe on a boat. They came by way of New York’s Ellis Island; you would be able to find their names in the records of the many immigrants that came by sea. The definitive word in my blog is ILEGAL.

The many illegal immigrants that come too this country will rip the fabric that holds us together as a nation. The cost of illegal Immigration is mind boggling, to say the least. They take many jobs that our citizens would love to have. From first hand experience I can tell you that they hurt many small businesses. It is hard to compete with someone that is able to work for practically nothing, and that is just the tip of the iceberg. They affect this country in many more ways.

There wouldn’t be a mass exodus too this land if they would stand and fight against their own corrupt government. There is much poverty in this world, we can’t bring everyone here too live the American dream, if we did that we would no longer be able to reach the dreams that we deserve, and have fought for as Americans. Together we stand; divided we fall. The mass exodus to this country is driving a wedge to further the gap of the have, and have not’s. Ask yourself, if there were not between twelve and twenty million illegal immigrants in this country’ would our unemployment rate be at 5%?  Truth if you haven’t taken the time to do so, please consider reviewing the links that I have posted with my newest reply on the save act. I mean really; be honest, don’t you hate to push one on a phone so you can communicate in your own land in English.

I totally agree about illegal immigration. Unfortunately I have not heard or seen any real and practical solutions to solve this problem from anyone.

I wouldn’t necessarily blame the 5% unemployment rate on illegal immigration though. I believe one of the biggest problems is that many corporations are moving out of country due to the enormous tax burdens to conduct business in the country.

US Corporations and individuals have to spend Billions each year to deal with tax code issues and changes in the tax system. Estimates by the “Tax Foundation” indicate that approximately 500 Billion dollars a year is spent by individuals and corporations to comply with current tax codes. This isn’t 500 Billion that makes it way to government spending programs, it’s 500 Billion in compliance cost and lost opportunities.

This is one of the reasons I support H.R. 25 “The Fair Tax Bill”. I believe if this bill were ever to pass, the U.S. economy would expand faster and greater then anytime in our history. I Believe it will bring many corporations back home to the U.S. because they would no longer have to spend outrageous amounts of money, and manpower hours dealing with tens of thousands of pages of tax code just for compliance.

All People will pay their fair and balanced share of taxes because they pay taxes based on what they spend. Rich people buy more things, they pay more taxes. Poor people buy less things, they pay less taxes. Heck even folks in the underground that never pay a penny in taxes, like drug dealers, Illegal immigrants, organized crime, anyone working under the table, would all be paying their fair share to federal taxes. This bill would also greatly reduce any unemployment issues this country.

So as for illegal immigrants and unemployment I am still keeping my eyes open until I see something that I feel will really work.

I would strongly recommend to anyone that has not read “The Fair Tax Book” by Neal Boortz and Congressman John Linder to do so, and give it some consideration. I believe if this bill were to pass many of the problems in our country will be solved.

That’s just my opinion I could be wrong.

Everyday between 3,000- 8,000 illegal cross our boarders with out any type of documentation as to who they are, or where they are going. We have a least 12 million Americans that are low skilled, or uneducated that could use the jobs being given to these illegal immigrants by corporations that exploit the fact that they have no documentation to work in this country legally. The corporations get away with paying them dirt wages knowing that they can’t complain to anyone about the pay they receive. The corporations in this country know that they are breaking the law by doing so, and our government just turn their heads, or say that our economy would be affected if they weren’t hear.  The bottom line is that 12- 20 million illegal workers in this country have got to have an effect on our unemployment rate in this country, along with every other aspect of our lives as we know it.

They over crowed our classrooms, Hospitals, and Prisons. It cost us taxpayers 12 Billion a year just to educate the illegals that come to this country, and another 17 Billion just to take care of the anchor baby’s education that are born here and become citizens even though their parents are here illegally. Hospitals spend Billions every year because our laws say we have to take care of them. The federal government sets aside one Billion a year to pay back a fraction of what the hospitals spend taking care of them. Who pays the rest; we do in the form of higher insurance rates, and larger Doctor and hospital fees that are passed on to the rest of our society. 30% of all federal prisoners are not citizens, at $63.50 a day for their care that equates to 3.3 million a day that the federal government has to pay for people that shouldn’t be here in the first place. Those figures do not even take into account all the State prisoners we have to take care of with our tax dollars. We haven’t even touched on low income housing, well fare or Medicade. Will the fare tax make a difference in the way this country operates, I say yes, but it has nothing to offer for illegal immigrants that flood this country everyday.

LaughingI agree, it's a big problem. But, whether or not we ever secure the flow of illegals into the country. If the fair tax was passed, guess what, all those illegals already in the country and those that continue to get through, will be paying federal taxes every time they purchase anything. I am not saying lets not worry about the problem and ignore it, we do need to fix this problem. But it will force everyone to pay their fair share.

Now compound that with corporations returning back to this country because they no longer have the huge tax burdens, and you will create thousands upon thousands of jobs. Industry that has left, would now return. The economy would boom, and instead of the government controling the money of the people, the people would be in control of their money, and the federal government will still receive the money they need to run the country.

Lets say we have 12 million ilegals working in country, and not paying federal taxes now. Pass the fair tax bill and if those 12 million currently make weekly puchases say that provide the federal govenment with $46.00 dollars a week (taxes from purchases) from those 12 million, and you get $552 million dollars the government would never have seen (per week). Multiply that $552 million by 52 weeks and smile Laughing

TH;

Are those numbers inclusive or exclusive of illegals? Especially the ones for 1980 and out.

Mike

It did't specify, As I read it, and I cringe to use the word assumed, But I assumed it to be exclusive
