St Johns RiverI am sure a lot of you are aware about the controversy surrounding the St Johns River. Central Florida which has been highly overdeveloped now wants to use the St Johns to (gasp) water their lawns. Our river has enough issues ( like sewage and fertilizers free flowing) without compounding the problems by sucking millions of gallons of water a day. The worst part is that Crist is avoiding comment on the issue. I think he is loud and clear in his actions. He is the developers best buddy. First, he has appointed developers to wildlife commission boards. Hmmm. Developers protecting Florida wetlands? Like the St Joe company polluting our river and getting away with it. Like in Clay county where wetlands have been filled. Hmm... And they will protect our Florida? They are not doing a very good job. It seems there could be better appointments besides big campaign contributing developers who would like access to protected areas to develop.. All they have to do is declare that they are environmentally sensitive and eat away at the edges of forests to develop. Secondly, he has now appointed a citrus executive to the water management board. Citrus will need lots of water to irrigate their orange crop. Do we really think they will care if the St Johns river health suffers to keep their crops going? I think that Central Florida needs to demand better of their city planning boards and demand answers for the over development that has already occurred. Not pass the buck and leave North Florida with another mess to deal with. And Charlie Crist is silent when the Times Union asks him for comment on the story. I think his actions are already speaking. Please, please, please contact Crist and our state officials and let them know that we will not stand for our water being siphoned out of the River!!! If we are silent than they will get their way.
