Remember Family of Deputy

Saturday was found to be a sad day in the lives of Law Enforcement when one of our Deputies was unfortunately killed in a motorcycle accident in Ocala. His name is Dennis Urban and was a long time servant of the county. He was on his day off when the accident occured.

His motorcyle was broad sided by an elderly driver who ran a red light. I ask that no matter what you believe in religiously, just remember his grieving children, family members and friends.

I had the pleasure of knowing Dennis since he began his career at the Sheriff’s Office 17 years ago. He was always a gentleman no matter the circumstance and a true professional. He would give you the shirt off his back if you were in need. There will be a void at the CCSO and we will miss him very much. My prayers are with the Urban family during this tragic time.

I didn't know Mr. Urban but the news said he also spent over twenty years in the Navy.  This is a man that spent his entire life in service to his community and his nation.  "Fair Winds and Following Seas Shipmate"

The below statement was released by CCSO regarding Deputy Urban. Like I said in an earlier post he was an officer and a gentleman.

PUBLIC INFORMATION ANNOUNCEMENT

CCSO Mourns Death of Veteran Deputy

(Release Date 5-5-08) Clay County Deputy Sheriff Dennis Urban was killed on Saturday, May 3rd, 2008 after he was hit by an elderly motorist while riding his personal motorcycle in Marion County. Local funeral arrangements have not yet been made but will be released when available. Our heart-felt condolences go out to the entire Urban family.
57-year-old Deputy Dennis Urban (CCSO Badge #444) served the Clay County Sheriff’s Office for 17 years, beginning in 1990. Prior to that, he served our nation as a member of the United States Navy from 1969 to 1990. For the Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Urban served as a Patrol Deputy, Evidence Technician, and as a Field Training Officer. As an FTO, he helped to train many of the agency’s young deputies now serving our community. Most recently, Deputy Urban was assigned to Watch 1-South-Zone 4, working calls for service in areas of Keystone Heights and Middleburg. He served under three Sheriffs, Bray, Lancaster and Beseler.
In 2004, Deputy Dennis Urban was named the CCSO Deputy of Year for his attempt to save the life of a dieing infant and for his handling of the incident scene. He is well known to many residents, many of whom wrote letters of thanks to him for his hard work and dedication through the years. Here are just a few examples of the words they used to describe him: professional, helpful, patient, quick to respond, impressive, informative, friendly, genuinely concerned. Deputy Urban was most recently recognized by his colleagues for his work on a case of home invasion robbery of an elderly resident in Keystone Heights and the eventual identification and capture of the suspect.
Deputy Urban is survived by his son Dennis Urban Jr. and his daughter Deanna Oram.

Deputy Urban's funeral service at Russell Road Baptist Church was both touching and very personal  It was also heavily attended by his fellow deputies, the Sheriff, the Clay County Fire and Rescue personnel, as well as police, and fire departments of surrounding communities and counties.  The 21 gun salute and ceremonial folding and gifting of the American flag to his family was moving and stirred anyone to strong feelings of appreciation of the brotherhood and sacrifice of our first responders who demonstrated immense loyalty to Mr. Urban.

In contrast, it seem strange that the County Commissioner who just regained her seat on the BCC failed to show respect to the fallen deputy and his fellow officers by not appearing at the funeral held in her district. In fact, the Sheriff was the only elected county official in attendance.  That's a shame - I think it's important to show respect to our fallen first responders.  I'm glad I went....it certainly reminded me of my mortality and how important it is to stay close to your family who love you.  Mr. Urban's family's demonstration of love for their father was something that we all hope our own children and grandchildren will feel for us when we are gone.

I had the honor of knowing Dennis Urban.  He was a very kind, funny, generous man.  It was with my pleasure I attended numerous family functions of the Urban Family.  He will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.  God Bless You Dennis.
