At Last, A Breath of Common Sense

As Ron Littlepage likes to say, "While Clicking Around the News Dial,"  I came across this article in the Gainseville Sun, Capitol Bureau, by Joe Follick, printed 05.05.08.  It has to do with the "Truck Nutz," issue & the wedge issues of abortion & evolution.  I think it pretty much sums up a lot of feelings.

"I think it's just an indication of a growing sentiment that the Legislature is out of touch with where people really are,'' said Rep. Keith Fitzgerald, D-Sarasota. "We're up here debating these highly emotional and symbolic and sometimes just downright silly bills when there are real and immediate problems that people want us to be addressing. What I'm getting is striking anger on the part of moderates.''

Yes, Yes.  I know.  Representative Fitzgerald is A Democrat.  Left up to some of you, I imagine the description would also include such colorful, descriptive terms such as, "Radical, left wing & godless."  But in order to be Fair & Balanced, (FAB) it must be pointed out that neither I nor any of you wrote the article, so it must stand as written.  Point is, someone who would normally be considered one of the , "Powers That Be," came out publically to say what so many have been saying for so long.  IMHO, I think it is a fresh breath of common sense.

On a side note, my readings lately have brought @ a bit of an epiphany.  I won't go into the evolution issue because after a certain amount of time, it gets quite tedious stating the totally obvious.  It has to do with the abortion issue.  I, like many other people who are pro choice, considered it to be a religious issue, in the main.  I read a different perspective on it which shed another ray of light.  If any of you wish to know, I'll be more than happy to put it in this blog.

Have a great one & definitely enjoy the Chamber of Commerce weather.  JATFUR.

Oh My God! If Rep. Fitzgerald doesn’t watch out he may see the error of his ways and turn into a Republican. Seriously though, it’s good to have moderates in both parties that use their heads once in awhile to realize that they are they to serve the common man and not their respective parties. I’m a registered Republican but I would rather have my Republican representative vote along Democratic lines once in awhile if the value of the legislation was for the betterment of the majority and not just because the party bosses want another notch on their guns. I would also rather my legislature sit in Tallahassee or Washington and do absolutely nothing if that was the best course to take. The legislature holds the purse strings of the government and every time they open their mouths it costs us more and more. If we are ever going to get a handle on the budget, it may be better if our elected officials caught a good case of laryngitis once in awhile.

Walt,

You are not alone in your feelings, I couldn't agree with you more.  Common sense is not the only rare virtue many in Goverment are lacking. Perhaps if they spent more time out in the real world instead of hanging out with lobbyists and big business they would be more in touch but that often flies in the face of personal gain and political favor.

It seems to me they should have spent a little more time trying to find a way to lower the budget cuts for education rather then waste their time and our money on nonsense.

The two party system over time has evolved into something that is one of the largest threats in our country, it's no longer about what is good for the nation, it's about winning, one side against the other.  If you can't win by purchasing power then you win however you have to.  It's apparent on all levels, including our own County Goverment.  I now include the term "lobbyist" as a dirty word, and this Country would be alot better off without them, I think they've also evolved into something that has been corrupted by greed rather then the altruistic idea that was the original premise.

Walt, Marsha,

I agree with your points to the point where I would suggest a collaboration to write a book.  But then silly me realised that the very same points that the two of you brought up have already seen the light of day & they have been seen by the eyes of the public.  One can only hope that interest gains more ground & more concerned people will start demanding some logic or at least common sense in our elected officials.  After all, don't they still work for us?  JATFUR.
