One Less Candidate
A couple of days ago, I let my friends and campaign supporters know I was withdrawing from this year's race for the District 3 seat on the County Commission. Yesterday, I notified the other two candidates in the race, and I'll file the official notice in the next few days at the Supervisor of Elections Office. If you think making the decision to run for elected office is tough, try making one to drop out. A very - very - small group of friends urged me to run. A large group, including a couple of phone calls yesterday from people I haven't even met yet, tried to talk me into staying in the race. A few years ago, I hurt my back when the only other driver on the road one Sunday afternoon in Willacoochee decided to use my restored '67 Volkswagon for target practice. I reaggravated the injury recently, and the requirements of campaigning have not allowed me recuperate. The needs of my back injury demand my time right now, just as the campaign is heading into the homestretch for the Aug. 26 GOP primary. Rather than ask people to continue to work in a campaign that I can't support with 100 percent effort myself, I've decided to withdraw. Supporters, voters and my two opponents in the District 3 race deserve nothing less my best. I've tried to contact each person who's been supportive, but feel like an actor on Oscar night. I'm sure I've probably left out someone deserving of my individual recognition and gratitude. Thanks to all for the encouragement, and belief that one man can make a difference in local government.
