MY TRIP TO WALMART TODAY

Can you think of any time that you, or anybody else for that matter, have walked into a Walmart Store owing $848,184.65, and left the store owing nothing?  Is than an unlikely scenario?

I witnessed the unlikely today, when Don Bowles, Sue Heath and I entered the Suntrust Bank located in the Walmart Store on Fleming Island.  We entered the store at 1:15 p.m. owing $848.184.65 in City debt.    We presented Tracie Henry a check for $848.184.65.  We left the store at 1:30 p.m. owing nothing.

Sue, Don and I weren't exactly dressed for the photo op, which I have attached below.  The young man in charge of the bank was doubtful that we were the Assistant City Manager, the City Manager and the Mayor.  When we started taking pictures, he thought that we were casing the joint for a robbery.  OK, maybe we did look a little suspicious.  But, how many bank robbers do you know that would rob a bank while carrying a check for $848,165.84 to pay off the City debt?

In any event, congratulations to the City of Green Cove Springs.  This is the first time the City has been debt-free since 1904.

 Mike Kelter, Mayor

Congratulations!  I don't suppose you would ever consider running for the BCC when you're no longer Mayor?  I admire your common sense approach, we need it on a County level.

Congragulations to the city of Green Cove Springs, Don Bowles and Sue Heath..I know that it has been a long road to get to this point. I know that it took alot of hard work and dedication to a long-time goal. Mr. Bowles I know that you have endured, personal attacks by some in city government, for your approach to getting out of debt. some called it "peace mealing" I call it being financially responsible. From what I know, I can say that without the two of you, Don and Sue, this dream would not have become reality.

With the funding issues that are facing the local governments today, because of amendment 1, having no debt puts the city "ahead of the curve". I hope and pray that with the City now in this Debt Free position The City Council can respect the city managers position of his "pay as you go" philosphy and KEEP THE CITY OUT OF DEBT. This of course would mean that the City Council needs to look at the projects that they want to get done vs. those that really need to get done and spend accordingly. I am sure that this will be addressed in the annual budget meeting and our council members will see that Keeping the City out of debt for the long term, not just for a few months, should be the goal.Cool
