To top it all offRead the story this morning on Ms Fitzgerald sueing the County for reimbursement for her legal fees. Well isn't that just the top of the Ice Berg! First of all an educated person, public figure that is making laws for county citizens to follow, in my opinion wrongfully uses County personnel and resources and a host of other items pulls this "change of venue" because she claims the inability to get a fair trial in front of the people that she "supposedly" wrongfully used these resources and wins that motion. Goes to St. Johns County were her "so called peers" returned "nonguilty" verdicts and now she wants Clay County to pay her legal fees. This is nothing but a sham and a crock. She was tried in front of people whom she didn't wrong, who probably could give a crap about the accusations. She was never tried infront of her own constituents. I guess justice is sweet in that regards but as I see it the citizens of Clay County were wronged again. This law suite is liable to cost, us, the tax payers of Clay County more then the illegal dumping scandal that brought all this to the forefront in the first place. So not only do we have to pay the bill to clean up after the illegal dumping we now will have to pay (if we lose)the cost of a length court process. Can't wait. Wonder what kind of impact fee the BCC will come up with now to pay this bill, if the lose. Democracy, Hah

We'll pay legal fees and whatever else, multiply that by 10 and Ms. F can leave Clay County for good. This would be one deal the taxpayers would have no problem paying........ Steven P Munsey A+, MCP, IASO Orange Park | Green Cove Springs munsey13@comcast.net

Steve, I understand your frustration over Ms Fitzgerald, but let's face it, the courts cleared her. As you are well aware of how I feel about the judicial system, this does not mean anything to me. But considering the number of people it would be nice to be rid of, starting with Elmer Polite and his mentally deficient judge, wouldn't it be a lot more cost effective for a long term lease of a gulag? I understand the Russians are in need of cash as much as anyone else these days. I would not be surprised if the legal counsel cost are near or over 100K on all three cases. Depositions of witness, court reporter cost, conferences, and trial do not come cheap. Good criminal defense attorneys are any where from $400-$600 an hour.

If she had been tried in Clay County and found guilty there would have been a darn good case for an appeal. The idea of a Jury trial is so that there are objective people on the jury, like it or not the system allows for a change of venue for just such reasons.
I AM NOT a fan of Ms Fitzgeralds, I am indifferent to her and believe there was a chain of wrong doing that led up to the situation which more then her are responsible for. I never paid enough attention to form an opinion at the time and it is a waste of time to do so now, she was found not guilty whether people like it or not.
I don't think there is anything sinister in wanting your legal fees paid, in the same situation so would I as would most anyone. I don't think they have a legal leg to stand on to get out of paying them and in order to stop the loss it would have been better to have just paid it. That 15K will probably at least double before all this is finished, and actually considering the amount of time all this took 15K is cheap considering what Attorneys get paid an hour.
Regardless of what the BCC does over this people are going to be angry, in paying them at least it would have been a stop to the drain on the taxpayers money rather then risking seeing it doubled or tripled, it's throwing good money after bad to fight it, at least that is what I believe. I don't think the county can afford a fight on principle right now.
