Kudos to KelterKudos to Mayor Kelter. As far as I know he is the only politician from this county that has the guts to get on here and address the citizens’ questions and concerns head on. I don’t think people bash on you Mayor. I think it is just that you’re the only person on the city council that is willing to get on this site. Don’t know if your colleges are less courageous than you or just smarter…Ha-Ha. I've admired Mike Kelters approach to citizens here in the blogs since the site began. Not only for having the kahunas to participate here and actually answer the questions or challenges put before him. I also admire his ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner, you don't have to read what he says five times to get it. I got to meet him at the GCS Merchants Forum at City Hall, and they did a great job with that forum I thought. There are always questions that aren't answered completely or answers that dance around the question, that's politics. A really good forum or debate for me would be a mixture of submitted questions and then a period of time for the audience to be able to push for answers that someone two stepped around. I also admire Kelter's courage and since he is so good at answering question, I have a few more. So now you have 4-5 plans for a new police station, lets see how long it is going to take for one of those plans to become Reality...That is the problems, a lot of talk and no ACTION. Also, I hear the city counsel WILL NOT allow the police department to get a drug sniffing K-9. What is up with that mayor? Is green cove springs now drug free (doubt it). I think the city would benefit greatly from a drug detecting K-9. I bet the officers are good but I doubt they can find drugs like a dog!

Finder, That's a good question.... He always tells you what he thinks, he's knowledgeable about the subjects he speaks of, he is clear and concise, and is honest about how he feels. So I double your question. How did he get elected? Maybe he should run for county commissioner. LOL Evinalmighty1, I agree. It would be great for the rest of the council to login and engage us in their thoughts and ideas. Some people's schedules don't allow for them to attend council meetings. And who wants to sit through all of the boring council meetings? How much do they earn a year for this privilege? Sunny, What is the basis for what you heard? I thought I was pretty in tune, but hadn't heard anything about the PD being denied a dog. Maybe you could give us some more detail on this. Has one even been asked for? Maybe someone should invite the police chief to the blogs. Submitted by Sunny123 on Thu, 06/26/2008 - 5:06pm.
Sorry I did not elaborate on my original post, I didn't have much time yesterday. Heres what I know. I spoke with someone from the P.D. the other day. I asked the person if they had K-9's. The person told me that is a "No Go Issue" with the city counsel. The person told me that it is well known through the department that a K-9 is not even to be mentioned. Apparently they could get TANK from city hall before they would ever be allowed to get a dog. I hope this is not true. I would think that a K-9 would be a great tool for law enforcement. I hope politicians are not telling police officers how best to do their job. Maybe the good Mayor can clear this up. Submitted by Evinalmighty1 on Thu, 06/26/2008 - 5:46pm.
Sunny is on to something people. I have learned a little more on topic so let me share. Chief Musco is a former K9 officer. When Musco was interviewed for the job he was questioned about K9’s and it was apparently made clear that dogs were a non-issue for the police department. The officers are told to ask the sheriff’s office for assistance with their dogs. The problem with that is that when the county does have a K9 officer on duty, they are usually in the north end of the county. Apparently the department had a dog in the 80’s and had a bad experience with a bad handler (the dog is only as good as its handler). That left a bad taste in the mouth of some people at city hall. First of all, I think that is ridiculous. If we all quit after one bad experience we would never get anything accomplished. Listen if green cove was the same as other some other towns the absence of a K9 dog would be no big deal but one of the main problems officers face in town is drugs and drug related crimes. Your right Sunny, politicians telling officer how to do their jobs. Submitted by FTDOAAWM on Thu, 06/26/2008 - 7:51pm.
My question about the dog is, are you not talking about two types of dogs? Since a drug dog is a specially trained dog, I believe that is about all that dog could be used for. It could not be used to search for a fleeing felon, or if needed to help control a group of people. Now maybe I’m wrong and one dog can do all this, but than is this one dog and the handler working 7/24/365? These dogs aren’t cheap, and from what I read in the paper Green Cove isn’t swimming in money. If I lived in GC I would want the electric problem solved first, without good steady and reasonably priced power GC will never grow. People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their part.

I'll go along with that. I'd like to know how the heck he got elected. He doesn't sound like a politician.
Maybe there is hope for a couple of members of the 'Snowball Club'.
