Real Estate Agent Wants To Be Clay Sheriff

Fleming Island Real Estate Agent Mike Taylor says he wants to be Sheriff of Clay County, Florida.  Taylor, 42, says he worked in law enforcement for about 18 years, although he left that field for a few years to work in the insurance industry.  He then worked primarily as a body guard for Florida governors, which comprises most of his of his law enforcement career.  Prior to working in law enforcement, Taylor was a Mormon Missionary, serving in Peru.  Taylor has not worked in law enforcement in the recent past, but his real estate license remains active.

Taylor picked up the endorsement of the Fraternal Order of Police, which has been at impasse with the current Sheriff, Rick Beseler.  Beseler, 54, has trimmed Sheriff's Department spending, sending two million dollars of unused money back to county taxpayers, but angering union bosses who demand more benefits and protections for their members.  Some other union bosses sympathetically sided with the FOP, but reportedly, rank and file union members are increasingly siding with Beseler.  Also, a special magistrate has ruled in Beseler's favor.  According to Florida Department of Law Enforcement statistics, despite its fiscally conservative approach, the Clay County Sheriff's office has a lower rate of most serious crimes, per capita, than that of surrounding counties.

Taylor has a Bachelors Degree from St. Leo University, and Beseler has a Masters Degree from the University of North Florida.  Beseler is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy.  Beseler has about 35 years of law enforcement experience.

A third candidate for Sheriff, Gary Newman, has 35 years of law enforcement experience.  Newman, a respected member of the community, has spent far less on his campaign than either Taylor or Beseler, and even by his own estimate is not drawing the attention given to the other two candidates.  His age and formal education are not listed on the Supervisor of Elections web site, www.clayelections.com

OldTimer,

According to what I have read, Gary Newman is 66 years of age.

The Sheriff said at the last debate at Ridgeveiw that REALTORS AND LAND DEVELOPERS have endorsed him. Aren't those the same groups that have got Clay county into much of this over developement?

Submitted by Angela on Thu, 08/14/2008 - 12:44pm.

I'm not Old Timer but it is a valid point that he is endorsed by those in the growth industry. I would also add his salary as a Sheriff is based of the State by population. Like the Commissioners salary. The more population the larger the salary. Of course the contribution and endorsements by the growth industry leads to a larger salary for the Sheriff it seems to be a match made in heaven.

Submitted by MrPike on Thu, 08/14/2008 - 1:49pm.

The Sheriff's salary is based on County Population not State.

Submitted by Angela on Thu, 08/14/2008 - 1:49pm.

It is based off a State Formula on the population of the county. The same as the commissioners are currently. I thought everyone understood that formula. I guess for some I needed to be more specific.

" I would also add his salary as a Sheriff is based of the State by population."

That quote leads people to believe that the salary is based on a state population.  The salary is calculated by the state, but is based on county population.  I just wanted to make sure that people reading this understood how it was calculated, it was not a stab at you.

Submitted by MrPike on Thu, 08/14/2008 - 2:07pm.

Another perspective on the Realtors and Land Developers endorsement is this;  Both Mike Taylor and his wife are realtors in this county, yet the Realtors and Land Developers endorse another candidate.  I found think this speaks for itself.

Submitted by Angela on Thu, 08/14/2008 - 2:14pm.

Nor was mine a stab at you. It was an opportunity to clarify the issue.

I think that's what great about the CTLAC amendment to limit the salary of the commissioners and let the voters decide if they get a raise. It takes away the incentive to just continue to increase the population.

I think I would put realtors in a different class than land developers. Realtors are just people wanting a job. Now when you get a BCC board full that may be of concern.

Land developers love the sound of bulldozers.

I think Mr. Taylor is only doing that job since he had to leave his position to run for office.

Submitted by Enough on Thu, 08/14/2008 - 2:15pm.

How is it then that the FOP, firefighters and teachers do not endorse their own???  I know this speaks for itself.

Angela;

Thank you for bringing that point into the discussion. That is only a small part of why Roy filed that suit against CTLAC.

I haven't heard much from the current members on how they would support this cut. Well Rutledge did say he would look hard for more efficiencies but I just don't think he meant this one.

I also don't think he meant getting rid of the +2 either. Somehow I just get the feeling that he knows which side that bread is buttered on.

If people have second thoughts about the Sheriff's salary being based on a state formula tied to population, they should be having apoplexy about the BoCC salaries.

Yes as of right now it will be a percentage but the number that percentage is based on can be largely controlled by the 7 (or hopefully 5) members.

Remember, Rutledge has already said that the tollway is doing what it was supposed to do by bringing in Governor's Park. Despite Bax's semantics lesson, those are his words quoted in the TU.

Mike I agree with apoplexy remark. It seems the only constitutional right the Commissioners have ever undersood. Is the constitutional right of land developers. The more property they clear the better constitutional rights they have. Smile

I think its great to limit spending by cutting the salaries that require a vote to get a raise. I think its great to vote to keep them at 5 instead of 7. More commissioners equal more money. I don't care how you look at the equation.

Submitted by MrPike on Thu, 08/14/2008 - 6:43pm.

We have already talked about why the FOP, firefighters and teachers support taylor... Taylor supports binding arbitration, while Beseler does not.  The FOP wants binding arbitration, and the fire and teachers have simply joined because they are unions (and unions stick together).

Now, the realtors and land developers is a whole different issue.  Mrs. Taylor is a real estate agent as her primary role.  Mr. Taylor may have only kept his license up to date in case of an emergency (I would have done the same) but his wife IS a real estate agent by trade.

The comparison you made does not equate, however, it was a valiant effort.

FOP, Firefighters, and teachers support Taylor because they want a honest man to be sheriff and they know t is time for change

Submitted by PrincessLeia on Thu, 08/14/2008 - 7:15pm.

FOP supports Taylor because he promised to give them what they wanted. Firefighters and Teachers support Taylor because FOP does. It's called union solidarity.

P.S.- Highly unlikely anyone will take you seriously with pos for a username...

Submitted by Angela on Thu, 08/14/2008 - 7:18pm.

Are we suppose to take you serious with your user name? Just wondering.

No matter who is the Sheriff on Aug 27th they will fall in lock step with the Fl Sheriff's Association. Just as Beseler has his walking order. They will too.

The decisions of the Sheriff will have an effect on all the Sheriffs.

Submitted by seeker on Thu, 08/14/2008 - 7:21pm.

For the firefighter's endorsement, it was decided upon by a majority vote of five (5) people.  If you ask the firefighters you will probably find the majority of them are not supporting Taylor.

You know that I could not possibly care less what you think, right? As a matter of fact, I would prefer if you NOT took anything I said seriously, and not responded to anything I say. Because I don't even know what planet you are from.

But, maybe you are pos? Did you perhaps forget to switch screens before replying?

Unless you are just having fun with Angela you are wasting your time responding to her.  She seems to be an expert on every topic I have seen discussed on these blogs.

You should grow up. Don't be so childish. This is a blog.

Hey seeker these are my opinions they don't have to be your opinions. Never stated I was an expert. I can tell you are not one either.

You know what they say about opinions. We all have one and they all stink. Smile

Fun, not really. Well, maybe a little bit. I think she goofed and is using multiple names, and thought I would call her on it. Normally I don't bother.

I've been on here for over a year.I am Angela and have always been Angela. When I'm not on the blogs I'm still Angela. When my mother calls me to dinner. She calls Angela. I think if I used another name it would be quickly identified. I believe all the long time bloggers could agree with that statement.

Yea, come on. We cant assume everyone that makes an asinine statement is angela. That would be rediculous!

This reminds me of the old days.  A blog that started about the Sheriff's race has meandered over to the BCC, and on to trying to ID Angela - again.  Good luck.

I hardly ever agree with Angela, but always appreciate & enjoy her contribution here.

Is it possible candidates are endorsed by PAC's because the PAC considers them the best candidate, and most likely to win?  Obviously, a PAC will not endorse a candidate that they feel will not represent most of their concerns and issues.  Kind of defeats the purpose of endorsing.

As a long time member of the real estate-developer-builder community, I have to honestly say that I never thought of the Sheriff as a player in the pro- or anti- growth game.

I think an intelligent Sheriff would recognize the predictions of the Census Bureau that US population will top 400 million by 2050, and at least a handful of those people are likely to end up in Clay County.  OH NO!!!

Let me know when you want to discuss real growth management.  Ideas like one-child-per-family, forced sterilization, and worse.  If "we" don't figure out how to reduce the population, I don't really think the Sheirff's policy on growth is going to have a big impact.

But hey - that's just me.

May the Force be with you.  Ugh - sorry.

Submitted by Angela on Thu, 08/14/2008 - 9:49pm.

I think you are a first class act. Regardless if we agree or disagree you are always such a gentleman. I always enjoy your contributions too.

I don't think the Sheriff's impact on growth is significant either. However, his salary is impacted. So are all the constitutionals.

I don't think we veered off too much this time. It was about a real estate agent and the Sheriff. Of course we have to make a little stop by the BCC. Just to make sure they are paying attention to the blogs. Smile

I would think that the land developers and realtors would actually have great interest in who becomes sheriff.  Nobody wants to move into an area that is overrun with crime.  Since their income is directly affected by who wants to move in, they would want to support the person they thought would make this county the safest.

Submitted by MrPike on Fri, 08/15/2008 - 12:35am.

If your name didn't lose people's respect, your comment about the unions supporting taylor because they think he will do the best job did.  Everyone on this blog knows that the unions support Taylor because he promised them what they want.

Submitted by nobackup on Fri, 08/15/2008 - 12:53am.

I disagree about Realtors causing the growth problems in Clay Co. They don't have that power. The county govt. has written the rules and is supposed to enforce them when it comes to allowing new developmenrts. Realtors list and sell what is made available to them, not creating new develpoments. Not all Realtors are in favor of more growth. I believe every politician is for growth, which is one reason why I distrust and dislike them. They tout the 2nd beltway as a way to reduce the problems of Clay Co. and promote growth. It growth that IS the problem.
