Doug Evans of Enchanted Lane in Middleburg was hoisting his washer and dryer on to cinderblocks Friday morning in hopes of keeping them dry as Black Creek continued to rise in his back yard. He spent Thursday night with friends in Fleming Island because he was without power. The power was restored Friday morning yet he still planned to head back to Fleming Island until Sunday.
Evans, whose house is on stilts, said he wasn’t frazzled after the major flooding he endured in 1992 that brought the creek up to his back deck.
“I climbed the railing and got in to a boat back then. This is a walk in the park,” he said. “I’ve seen so much worse it’s not funny.”
Traffic signals on U.S. 17 at County Road 209 in Green Cove Springs were without power Friday afternoon. Other than some fallen limbs, that were cleaned up soon after they fell, Green Cove Springs had been unharmed by Tropical Storm Fay as of Friday noon, according to Green Cove Springs Police Chief Robert Musco.
“We’ve been lucky,” he said.
