Boo to Bellsouth
Last night while attending the Game of the Week....Orange Park High School at Fleming Island High School, I was surprised at the announcement during the second quarter of the game. "Anyone parked in the Bellsouth parking lot, please move your vehicles or they will be towed". Now, I've been told the building is open 24 hours a day BUT, football fans on Friday nights have parked in the lot across the street from the school for the 7 years that I have attended the football games at Fleming Island High. Never have I heard this announcement before. This was a huge game for both schools. There were thousands of people in attendance Friday night. Bellsouth had to of known of the expected large crowd for this game. If they did not want anyone parking in their lot, for whatever reason, they should have blocked it off prior to the game. Why wait until the second quarter of the game, causing some fans to leave the game and not come back. I view this as Bellsouth being non-supportive of our community. I personally have never seen signs posted to not park in the lot across the street from the school. I'm not saying they are not there, I've never seen them myself. Upon leaving the game and pulling out of the school parking lot, I noticed that the Bellsouth parking lot for the most part was empty....which leads me to believe they did not need the parking spaces that were previously taken up by football fans! Way to go Bellsouth, way to support your community! I say Boo to you!

There is some history about the Bell South Parking lot you may not be familiar with Sam. Bell South had been good neighbors until their parking lot was trashed several times by folks utilizing their lot to park while they attended a school function. Soda bottles, food containers and beer bottles were left behind for Bell Staff to clean up. When it first happen a representative from Bell South called the school to speak with the principal and was blown off. Maybe if school staff had apologized for the mess and sent someone over to clean up they may allow parking in their lot for folks visiting school functions. The last time I drove by Bell South the lot is properly marked warning folks that their car will be towed if they park unauthorized.

I guess I can see the fraustration that this may have caused for some. But it begs a few questions and some fair perspective as well.
Is it Bell South's responsibility to know it was an important game to the folks attending?
Could the school promoting this game and with the insight of it being very important asked Bell South in advance for permission to use thier parking area?
Would the school be willing to reciprocate and allow Bell South to park thier vehicles in the school parking lot?
Does Bell South not have the right to it's own property and decide who gets to park there?
Would any citizen be upset if thier neighbor had an unannounced party or gathering in which thier guests used and blocked thier drive ways?
Many times in games that are important to both teams that are playing emotions run very high and often tempers flare and things tend to get out of control. Maybe Bell South was just trying to protect it's property from possible damages that could spill over into it's parking area.
I can understand the fraustration, but would not cast Bell South as the wrong doer.
