German Students Visit St. Johns Country Day SchoolSt. Johns has enjoyed an exchange program with the Hochrad Gymnasium in Hamburg, Germany for over twenty years. The program was started by the former Hochrad headmaster, Hans Schuman. He felt it is important for people of different nations to get to know each other and form bonds. He was a small child in Hamburg, and fled to the country with his mother when Hamburg was bombed during WWII. He recalled seeing all the fires and devastation as his family fled. Because of his experiences he was committed to developing friendships through the exchange programs with schools throughout the United States. The exchange with St. Johns began with soccer teams, but over time, the exchange became one of music groups rather than athletic teams. In 1991 the first group of St. Johns Singers visited Hamburg, and the visits continued in 1994, 1998, 2000, 2005, and 2008. It is always a fabulous trip. The Singers' trip includes stays in the south of Germany with lots of sightseeing. Singers have visited Berlin, the World Expo in Hanover (in 2005), the medieval town of Lubeck, the Saltmines near Salzburg, the castles built by Ludwig II of Bavaria, the Nazi quarters in Berchtesgarten, and the Mozart birthplace and museums in Salzburg. In 2000 they were able to see the world famous Oberammagau Passion Play. The planned activities are always fun and educational. The second part of the trip is spent in Hamburg where the group performs at churches and schools, then joins with the Hochrad student groups for a final exchange concert. St. Johns students are very fortunate to have this opportunity. They have the chance to form friendships that may last a lifetime.
