newsAn Interesting Question
I came across an interesting article today in the Financial Times, dealing with the continuing problems of the newspaper industry. The titled asked, "Who will mourn local papers?" Think about it for a minute. If the TU, MCS, Clay Today & Folio would declare bankruptcy & eventually be unable to print at a profit any more, from where would you get your news as a replacement? How much would you miss reading the news overy your morning coffee or cereal? Also, how easy would it be for you to make the transition, if you are able? Food for thought. JATFUR. Rich K News You Might Have Missed
OK kids. Here's some news, hot off the wires, that you might have missed. 1. From Breitbart.com, 7-21. McCain blames Obama for rising gas prices. I Guess McCain thought it a slow news day. 2. From Breitbart.com, 7-21. Court tosses FCC "Wardrobe malfunction" fine against CBS for 2004 Super Bowl. They said it took this long for a ruling because they kept viewing & reviewing the evidence. Naughty, naughty court. Looking forward to more nudity in future Super Bowl Games. 3. From Yahoo News, 7-21. McCain & Obama to make 1st joint campaign appearance on August 16 at Rick Warren's Saddleback Church in Orange Cty., Cal. Yes kids. You're absolutely right. There is no shame in politicians. But on the bright side, it will be in LA LA Land. Friday's Metro Section
From this morning's edition of the T-U ... - The Nassau County Commission took the car keys away from a couple dozen employees. They'll have to drive their own vehicles (filled with their own gas) to and from work now instead of riding on the public dime. They figure that's about a $40K savings per year, less wear and tear on the vehicles. Common sense. Time to put the brakes on Clay County employees unnecessarily taking their official vehicles home each night. - Jaguar defensive back Brian Williams was found not guilty in his DUI trial. His lawyer, Hank Coxe, seems to never lose a case. If I'm every accused of something, like maybe illegally burying $9 million in a county landfill, I think I'd hire him to be the one to represent me in court. Fire injures woman, displaces families in Orange Park
About 15 families were displaced by fire at an Orange Park apartment complex Thursday, authorities said. A woman was burned and suffered other injuries when she apparently jumped from the second floor of her building at the Kings Tree complex in the 1800 block of Kingsley Avenue, said Batallion Chief Fred McCutcheon of Clay County Fire and Rescue. He said a preliminary investigation indicates a cooking fire in the woman’s apartment started the blaze. Fire destroyed two second floor apartments and six others were damaged by smoke and water, he said. Firefighters were mopping up about 10:30 p.m. Thursday. The fire was reported just before 6:30 p.m.
The myth of pet overpopulation?
An article from the San Francisco Gate has been making its way (several times over) through my inbox the past few days. The scandal: Nathan Winograd, former director of operations for the San Francisco SPCA, and his new book, "Redemption: The Myth of Pet Overpopulation and the No-Kill Revolution in America". At first take, it may seem Winograd is akin to those who say that the Holocaust never happened or that the Earth's population isn't booming. That's not the case. Winograd isn't denying that there is a crisis in America's shelters, but in fact shifting the perspective - and the mantle of blame - from the notion of 'too few homes for shelter animals' to the very staff of these shelters, saying "If a community is still killing the majority of shelter animals, it is because the local ... shelter has fundamentally failed in its mission."
Annual Quigley House report and luncheon set for Sept. 27
Quigley House will hold its Annual Meeting at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27. The event will take place at the Orange Park Woman’s Club, 130 Kingsley Ave. in Orange Park. The public is invited to attend what executive director Sharon Youngerman describes as “the state of the union” meeting. She will install new officers, discuss what the shelter has accomplished in the last year and where they hope to be next year. The comprehensive domestic violence and sexual assault shelter has received some press lately for its addition of an on-site kennel, making it the second in the state and one of few in the nation to provide facilities for abused women’s pets. Animals often bear the brunt of abuse after a victim leaves. Austin's search continues Sunday, Aug. 12
The search for Austin Davis, the 26-year-old Argyle man who has been missing for about seven weeks, will continue in High Springs tomorrow, Sunday August 12. The search is prompted by reports of Davis sightings in the area, according to his family.
Anyone wishing to volunteer any amount of time is asked to join in the hunt for Austin. He is Caucasian, 5' 8" weighing 160-180 pounds, with dark brown hair, blue eyes, dimples and a scar on his right cheek. He disappeared without notice on June 26, 2007, and did not take any belongings with him.
There will be a 'command post'/meeting area at the Winn-Dixie, located at 1080 NW Santa Fe Blvd. off 441. Law enforcement agencies will be on the scene to assist in the search, which the family expects to last until dark. Any time you can spare to help would be useful.
